Press releases/announcements

Writing a press release and distributing it through appropriate channels will gain valuable exposure for your brand.

A press release is a formal announcement made by a business that shares newsworthy information, relating to its latest business development, with the media and other interested parties. Its aim is to generate press coverage.

Also referred to as a media release, news release, and press statement, a press release is typically written by a company’s marketing or public relations team (internal or external) and sent to media outlets, such as newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and websites.

A press release can contain information referring to a change in public dealing, strategic partnering, joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, rebranding, notable hiring, product launches, or information of great importance.

Some characteristics of a good press release include:

  • It must be framed in a way that is objective and factual to be considered genuinely newsworthy.
  • It must communicate all the essential information – who, what, when, where, and how.
  • It must be factually correct.
  • It should follow the inverted pyramid approach: Start with the main idea or purpose then structure the next paragraphs by adding quotes and facts in the right order.
  • It should ideally not exceed 500 words, or two double-line-spaced pages.
  • It should be sent to the correct media – the shotgun approach does not work, and in fact irritates media personnel.

A well-written press release can help to build a brand’s reputation in the market, leading to increased sales. However, to be effective, it needs to be carefully thought out and drafted.
